GEN AI: Hybrid – Live Action with AI VFX
This project was supposed to be entirely live action, but as wise people say: shit happens. Shooting under UV light took longer than I expected, and the day wrapped with everything I needed, but without the disgusting yet beautiful poo-poetry shots I'd imagined.
I also discovered that particles are almost invisible under UV light. I shot them as best I could, but they were nowhere near what I'd pictured. So I enhanced them with AI.
Then came the toilet sneeze. You have no idea how many types of sneeze there are. Is it gooey? Watery? Does it have tendrils? I became a sneeze expert without meaning to.
Then came the fun part. Probably the best moment in the treatment was our character's reaction to the particles everywhere: he flicks the light off and on to make sure it's real.
Unfortunately, as the shoot day ran out of hours, this was the first thing to go. Gutting, no pun intended. But praise be to AI, I managed to bring it back to life.
The next one was a first for me. With a tight schedule, everyone was looking for shots to cut, and the client decided to cut… 🥁🥁 THE PACKSHOT. I know, I know. The plan was to shoot the neon sign, then have the camera continue down to the product as our character picks it up.
Fortunately, I managed to bring it back, and the story makes sense again.
Then came the biggest disappointment of the day. Everyone had high hopes for this shot: a big camera move, flying past a beautifully visible spray cloud and along the toilet seat. Well… first, the UV light and the spray stopped talking to each other, and the spray became completely invisible. Then the camera move we'd rehearsed on the prep day ran into technical problems, and I never got the shot I'd sold in. But, oh well. AI likes sprays, and the shot ended up looking great.
